The Value of Board Certification in Emergency Medicine

Dr. Kowalenko serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, overseeing their clinical care, education, research, and financial/operational performance. Dr. Kowalenko previously served as Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and as Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospitals, Royal Oak, Troy, and Grosse Pointe. His earlier responsibilities have included Director of Continuous Professional Development for the University of Michigan Medical School, and held the faculty appointment as Clinical Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education, Program Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Michigan / St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and Program Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, Detroit Medical Center / Sinai-Grace Hospital. He also served as an attending physician in Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital. An active researcher, Dr. Kowalenko has focused his interests in workplace violence and quality measures and board certification. He is a Past President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has served as a member of several American Board of Medical Specialties committees. He is also a member and serves on committees for the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Dr. Kowalenko has received numerous awards, including the American College of Emergency Medicine National Teaching Award, Distinguished Educator Award of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academy for Scholarship, and the Ronald L. Krome, MD Meritorious Service Award.  He has made more than 150 presentations nationally and internationally and has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and other professional publications, as well as book chapters and numerous abstracts. Dr. Kowalenko received his medical degree from the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine, completed residency at the University of Cincinnati, and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Leadership in Emergency Medicine

Ian B. K. Martin, MD MBA FAAEM FACEP, is System Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee. At the Medical School, he holds appointments as Professor with Tenure of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Dr. Martin is also Emergency Physician-in-Chief of the Froedtert and MCW health network. Before this, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown.

Dr. Martin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania – Hahnemann School of Medicine and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of North Carolina (UNC) Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dr. Martin trained in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center/Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore — where he also served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Martin has devoted his academic career to improving the delivery of emergency care internationally — with emphasis on East Africa — through program development, investigative research, and direct clinical care.

Dr. Martin’s research interests include elucidation of optimal models for emergency department-based HIV and hepatitis C testing, host-response to acute infections, and acute care disease burden epidemiology in developing countries. His research and other Global Health-related initiatives have culminated in a host of publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Martin has garnered grant support for his research from federal and state agencies, industry, and academic institutions.

Recognized for his leadership, Dr. Martin recently became President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) — the premier association representing researchers and educators in emergency medicine. Before that, he completed a one-year term each as President-Elect and Secretary-Treasurer of the Society. Dr. Martin is also the founder and a Past-President of SAEM’s Global Emergency Medicine Academy. He is the 2018 recipient of the Marcus L. Martin, M.D., Leadership Award — a prestigious award given by SAEM’s Academy of Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Martin is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Ways Forward

Dr. Fares will give an overview of the current status of EM in the MENA region and the different challenges in advancing the specialty. He will highlight the numerous opportunities and efforts taken over the past few years.

Dr. Fares is the first Canadian and American board-certified emergency physician from the United Arab Emirates. He completed his medical education at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2000. He then completed the Royal College Emergency Medicine Residency Program at McGill University in Montreal, Canada (2002-2007). In 2008, he completed a fellowship in clinical Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the University of Toronto in Canada followed by a Disaster Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA as Harvard’s first Disaster Medicine fellow and as co-founder of the program (2009). In May 2011, he obtained his Master of Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at which he is currently enrolled in a DrPH program in Health Care Management and Leadership. His project during the MPH/DrPH is the Emergency Medical System framework in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Dr. Fares is currently an Emergency Medicine Consultant and Deputy Commander of Zayed Military Hospital and is the founder and chairman of the Trauma System Initiative of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He is also the founder and president of the Emirates Society of Emergency Medicine (ESEM) since 2012. Dr Fares has contributed to several international textbooks and peer-reviewed articles in the field of Emergency Medicine and Disaster Medicine, and has presented in several conferences regionally and internationally.

The Future of Global Health

Associate Director for Science & Chief Medical Officer, Center for Global Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia

Dr. Vikas (Vik) Kapil is the Chief Medical Officer and Associate Director for Science at CDC’s Center for Global Health. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing scientific review and clearance, human subjects protection and the Extramural Research Program Office for CDC’s Global Health programs. He also oversees CDC’s initiative on household air pollution and health and a long-standing collaboration on environmental and occupational health and injury prevention and control with the Government of India. In his previous roles at CDC, he has served as Associate Director and Chief Medical Officer and Acting Deputy Director for the National Center for Environmental Health/ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR), as Associate Director for Science for the Division of Injury Response at CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), and as the Branch Chief for the Surveillance and Registries Branch at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR). Prior to joining CDC/ATSDR in 2002, he served as Director of University Health Services at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Kapil attended medical school at Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and received a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Michigan. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at POH Medical Center in Pontiac, Michigan and Fellowship in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine and adjunct faculty appointments at Emory University and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Post Disaster Mortality Studies:
Lessons and Tools from Puerto Rico

Nishant is a second year doctoral student studying Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is interested in developing and implementing epidemiological tools that leverage high-throughput and “big” population level data for the evaluation of and intervention for infectious disease transmission dynamics in an increasingly urbanized and connected world. He is the CEO and Co-Founder of EpiTech Consultants, a public health technology consulting firm that specializes in the development of analytic pipelines for complex public health problems. In his free time, Nishant enjoys rowing and riding his bike.

Vital statistics play a critical role in the precise quantification of morbidity and mortality post disaster. However, disasters often weaken the infrastructure needed for the reliable and timely collection of vital statistics. Here we evaluate the immediate and long term evaluation of population dynamics and vital statistics in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and discuss tools in development to aid future response.

Leadership of Women in Emergency Medicine

Dr. Melanie Stander obtained her undergraduate medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and her subsequent emergency medicine physician degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.  She currently works as the Emergency Medicine Manager for Mediclinic Southern Africa which is one of the largest private hospital groups in South Africa. Her role involves providing strategic direction, oversight, leadership and managerial support to almost 50 Emergency Centres in South Africa and Namibia. She is the immediate past President of the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa (EMSSA) and the chair of the EMSSA Ultrasound Special Interest Group. She has been actively involved with the International Federation for Emergency Medicine, first as the Board representative for Africa, then as Member-at-large on the executive.  In 2016 she was elected to the position of Secretary and in 2018 she was elected to her current position of Vice-President.  She has been the chair of the IFEM Gender Specific Issues Special Interest Group since it's creation in 2014.  She was the chair of the Local Organising Committee of the ICEM 2016, Cape Town, South Africa and in 2015 she was awarded the Order of the IFEM.  She is passionate about system development and improvement in emergency medical care, international emergency medicine, driving engagement around issues of gender equity for professionals in healthcare and point of care ultrasound.

Her talk on Leadership of Women in Emergency Medicine will touch on her personal journey in the healthcare profession and how that has shaped her.  She will also share international trends around gender equity in Emergency Medicine and medicine in general.  She will also detail particular IFEM Gender Specific Issues Special Interest Group initiatives to date.
