Keynote Speaker

Dr. Petra Khoury has been appointed as Director, Health and Care Department, at the World Health Organization and is based in Geneva, Switzerland, effective 04 October 2021.

Dr. Petra Khoury, who is a national of both Lebanon and the United States, brings significant professional experience from both countries. Most recently, she led the national COVID-19 response and vaccination plan in Lebanon and was appointed as the Chair of the national COVID-19 Vaccination Executive Committee. In this capacity, she developed and executed the operational response and vaccination plan and became the nation's scientific spokesperson on COVID-19 related matters, serving as the Public Health Advisor to the Prime Minister of Lebanon.

Prior to her leadership role in the national COVID-19 response in Lebanon, Petra served as Executive Administrator at the Medical Centre on Re-engineering the Delivery of Healthcare at the American University of Beirut Medical Centre (AUBMC), where she assisted the Director of the centre in programme management and evaluation. She was subsequently appointed as Chief Quality and Compliance Officer and joined the Executive Leadership Team at AUBMC. In this role, she had oversight over quality, safety, risk management, medico-legal, Joint Commission accreditations and regulatory compliance.

Petra holds a doctorate degree in Pharmacy from Lebanese American University in Lebanon. She trained at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)-Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts U.S.A, and specialized in infectious diseases. She also earned a Post-graduate certificate in Quality, Safety, Leadership and Informatics from Harvard Medical School. She is fluent in Arabic, English and French.

Dr. Amin Kazzi is

1. a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine
2. The Founding Former Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB)
3. In 2010, he moved on to serve for 5 years as the Deputy Chief of Staff at the AUB Medical Center.
4. In 2016, he served as the official Advisor to the Lebanese Minister of Health Wael Abou Faour.
5. He is currently President for the Lebanese Society of Emergency Medicine.
6. The founding Editor-in-Chief for the Mediterranean Journal of Emergency Medicine & Acute Care (Med-JEM) which targets the developing nations globally.

Dr. Kazzi completed his medical education (MD) at the University of California, Los Angeles (MD 1988), then categorical residency training in Emergency Medicine (EM) in Detroit, Michigan (1991).

Board Certified in EM, he then practiced for 14 years at the University of California, Irvine, where he succeeded in establishing the first academic department of emergency medicine among the 5 campuses of the University of California.

Dr. Kazzi is internationally renowned in EM for his leadership role as President for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), for its California and Mediterranean chapters (CAL/AAEM & MAEM) and for the Lebanese Society (LSEM).

Dr. Kazzi earned a number of key international leadership and recognition awards, the most important being the 2nd out of 3 recipients of the honorary designation as Master of the Academy of Emergency Medicine (MAAEM), the (European Society of Emergency Medicine) EuSEM & AAEM Founder’s Award, the AAEM International Leadership Award, the Resident Association Special Recognition Award, the Robert McNamara National Academic Achievement Award, & the David Wagner Award for longstanding special national (US) impact in the specialty.

More recently, in September 2015, the AAEM Board of Directors voted unanimously to rename its annual international leadership award “the Amin Kazzi International Emergency Medicine Leadership Award” in appreciation for his longstanding exceptional service and profound contribution to AAEM and to the international development of EM.

As a 1985 recipient of the President Bachir Gemayel Foundation Honorary Award, he had committed to acquiring knowledge and developing skills unavailable in Lebanon, and to bringing that home. So, he did… Dr. Kazzi returned to in Lebanon in 2006 to establish the specialty of EM and standards for excellence in EM care. Working with an exceptional team of stellar faculty, he established an academic department of EM, the first in the Middle East. Residency programs emerged across Lebanon – including an American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) International-accredited Emergency Medicine program at AUB. This is one of a few in the world.

Dr. Motov is an Emergency Medicine Attending Physician and Research Director practicing in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Medical Academy of Latvia and completed his EM residency at Maimonides Medical Center. Dr. Motov is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine who is very passionate about safe and effective pain management in the ED.  He has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and multiple presentations on the subject of opioid alternatives for ED pain management and he is actively involved in growing this body of work both nationally and globally

Dr. Tintinalli is a professor and founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She was president of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (1989-1990), the founding president of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors, and past-president of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (2006-2007). She is editor in chief of Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine and AccessEmergencyMedicine (McGraw Hill Education).

She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine in 1997. She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in April, 2017, by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. In October 2018 the American College of Emergency Physicians named one of the society’s key leadership awards the Judith E. Tintinalli Award for Outstanding Contribution in Education.  In 2019 she was named ‘Fellow of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine’ FIFEM.

Mark Lawrence Zammit was born in 1974 and raised in Malta. He is employed as an Advanced Pharmacy Practitioner within the Ministry for Health, Malta and is a Visiting Senior Lecturer within the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta (UOM).

He has expertise in the area of clinical toxicology and pharmacology. He has worked within the Department of Health, Malta for more than 25 years in various positions and been asked to represent Malta in various fora both nationally as well as internationally. He is a member of various national committees and is also an expert within the Malta National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Board.

He lectures clinical toxicology and pharmacology at the UOM and has researched the roles and functions of poisons information centres. He has also been involved in international collaborative projects in the area of clinical toxicology. Mr Zammit has extensively lectured at International congresses and developed curricula and training programs in pharmacology and clinical toxicology.

He is a fellow of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) and a member of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT).

He has been General Secretary of EAPCCT (2014-2018), and is an EAPCCT Executive Committee Member and a very active member of other EAPCCT committees and working groups. He is also a member of the EU SCHEER pool of experts on ad hoc rapid risk assessment relating to cross border toxicological risks (since 2019) and a management committee member of the European Venom Network (EUVEN).
