Medical Publication Workshop

Sunday, 22 September 2019

Course Description

As an Associate Editor for the Journal of Emergency Medicine, and as a former Senior Associate Editor for the Journal Academic Emergency Medicine, serving the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, one scientific difficulty has become clear to me. As a native speaker of English, I find that many non-English speaking emergency physician-scientists are challenged to become published for reasons that do NOT include having poor ideas or good science. These bright colleagues are not burdened by poor scientific methods or findings.  Rather, it is difficulties with expression of or writing in the English language that serves as a barrier to publication.

Recognizing this, and with the blessings of the Executive Committee of the 10th Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress, I wish to announce a Medical Publication Pre-Congress Workshop, designed with the non-native English speaker in mind.

The faculty for this workshop will be various native English speakers who have been editors-in-chief, or decision editors, for various English-language emergency medicine journals.

Faculty and attendees will perform the following functions:

Course Process

  • Attendees will register for the Medical Publication Pre-Congress Workshop
  • Registrants will be matched with a faculty mentor
  • Registrants will then follow up by sending a copy of their draft manuscript of a previously planned scientific work, or of a work-in-progress, to the Medical Publication Pre-Congress Workshop mentor to whom they have been assigned
  • The mentor will read and suggest revisions to the manuscript and communicate these to the registrant by email or other means
  • These steps can be repeated as many times as the mentor and registrant can accomplish, before the MEMC
  • The mentor and registrant will finalize the preparation of a manuscript suitable for submission to a medical journal at the workshop
  • As time permits, the workshop will also enable face-to-face communication between the registrant and the mentor, toward planning future scientific investigations

At the end of this process, we hope that more non-native English speakers can become published in an English-language journal, as facilitated by this mentorship.
