AAEM Board of Directors–YPS Director
Flying home from yet another phenomenal Scientific Assembly (SA), I find myself reflecting on my time as Young Physician Section (YPS) president and what makes AAEM such a special organization. One could probably argue it is our values, mission or educational offerings, but I would disagree. Although each of these is an essential part of the Academy, I believe what makes AAEM truly special can be distilled down to one word: people.
From the support staff that makes it all happen behind the scenes to the inspirational board of directors, this organization is overflowing with amazing people. Each year SA is a chance to reunite with my AAEM "family" and bond as we work to further the goals and mission of the organization. During my time in leadership roles with YPS and the Resident and Student Association (RSA), it has been my honor to serve alongside some of the most innovative and inspirational EPs who are already well on their way to becoming leaders in the field. Transitioning to the YPS director position, I plan to continue fostering these relationships and ensure that the needs of YPS are prioritized with the board of directors.
In addition to reuniting with old friends at SA, it is always inspirational to meet the next generation of YPS and RSA leaders. Grassroots development of future leaders is a hallmark of my own AAEM experience, and it is always a pleasure to mentor those following in my footsteps. One of my greatest honors has been to introduce my medical student mentees to this organization early in their careers and foster them into leadership roles.
Beyond RSA and YPS, AAEM also attracts dynamic individuals by offering motivated members opportunities to contribute through advocacy, educational events and leadership roles. Democratic methods and a system that rewards effort and productivity, rather than political ties in determining levels of involvement, are unique attributes among professional organizations. This approach cultivates leadership from within and has repeatedly proven successful at finding those "shining stars" among the membership.
Perhaps Lawrence Bossidy, retired CEO of Honeywell International, said it best, "I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day you bet on people, not on strategies." Fortunately for AAEM, all of our "people" are volunteer members who believe in the organization and its mission. I believe the Academy has embraced the "bet on people" philosophy, and in the future, this will continue to be our greatest asset.
